Sailfish OS is a Finnish mobile operating system developed by Jolla, offering a genuine alternative to the dominant mobile OS platforms. Known for its flexibility, privacy, and trust from both corporations and governments worldwide, Sailfish OS represents a mature and secure choice for mobile devices.

In this project, I developed a design system for the Sailfish OS website from scratch. The goal was to align the website’s design with Sailfish’s established brand identity while making it consistent across all platforms. Using Brad Frost’s atomic design approach, I created a modular and scalable structure. Sketch was my primary tool for designing, and I used SASS as a CSS preprocessor to build the website’s layout.

The resulting website was entirely modular, well-documented, and scalable, allowing for easy future updates and maintenance. This design system ensures that updating the site is straightforward and enjoyable, even for those without coding expertise.

My role encompassed the overall visual design of the website, building the site on WordPress, and ensuring its consistency with Sailfish OS’s existing brand guidelines. I worked closely with Martin, Jolla’s chief designer at that time, who provided the necessary assets (UI screenshots), and Juhani, the copywriter, who crafted the engaging content for the site.

The Sailfish OS has a robust online community which helps to develop the OS further by providing insights, code snippets, and translations.
